This is a sewing pattern for the stylish jacket worn by the high society of the late 1920s and early 1930s, but has its origins in the late 19th century. In England, where house parties were the rule, one always had to be properly dressed. After the ladies retired, the gentlemen adjourned to the billiard or smoking room for brandy and good cigars. Because they did not want to ruin their finely tailored dress coats, the smoking jacket was born. There is almost no difference in construction technique between Folkwear’s original 1930s version and the 19th-century jackets. The shoulder seams set toward the back, two-piece sleeves and angled pockets are all examples of how little men’s tailoring had changed.Folkwear offers two versions of Le Smoking Jacker, both sized for men and women. One has softly quilted lapel and cuffs, accomplished with a simple technique that does not require extra quilting materials. The other versions offers contrasting lapel, cuffs, sash, and pocket bands. Also included are knitting instructions for a slinky tank top, sized for women. Knit in a stockinette stitch, it has think straps and a scoop neck.
